Knowing Autism and Doman International!

[This posts helps a parent to understand the challenges of a child detected with Autism. There are many kids waiting who need the right approach to be able to creep, walk, talk, to express excitement and feelings.]

What kids need is little help, hope and someone who believes in them ~Magic Johnson. Believe in children whose needs are special, know the right approach, give them the necessary tools, work with them and what you’ll witness will be some magical developments.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental or neurobehavioral disorder. It affects the brain development due to events before birth, at the time of birth or even after birth. It is often referred as ASD ( Autism Spectrum disorders), as there are multiple disorders which come under this spectrum.

Major Symptoms of Autistic child :

• Difficulty in social interaction and communication : It starts with difficulty in various human interactions. Babies are unable to turn towards voices, fail to respond to their names, difficulty in babbling, unable to understand gestures and various expressions.
• Repetitive behavioural patterns, as Jumping, twirling, repeating sounds, certain words, loose hand movements. They can display these repetitive behaviours at the time of overwhelming situations as well.
• Delay in speech, language and cognitive development : Most of the children with right intervention develop language, though they have difficulty in combining words, processing sentences.
• Hyperactivity, sensory hypersensitivity clubbed with anxiousness : Children can show extreme sensitiveness, sudden outbursts, aggressive behaviour at times, more so during some overwhelming situations.
• Poor fine and gross motor skills, disorganized movements
• Sleep problems: Sleep issues can be rectified with sleep therapies unless a child has medical issues.

Some kids may also have other disorders associated due to autism as ADHD, Unable to process sensory information(Sensory Integration Dysfunction), gastrointestinal problems (as constipation, being colic, gastric issues, abnormal bowel movements), Seizures as well. And all these symptoms might range from mild to severe.

Causes of Autism :

The exact cause of Autism is yet under research and one specific factor cannot be claimed to cause Autism. But certain Environmental and Biological factors along with faulty genetic interactions results in an autistic child.

Abnormal genes, gene mutations, faulty gene interactions, triggered with other factors as stated below are the causes of Autism and ASD.

• Difficult Birthing, resulting in periods when baby’s brain is deprived of oxygen
• Age of parents at the time of conceiving
• Pregnancy infections as Rubella, other viral infections as Encephalitis (caused by HSV)
• Extreme premature baby, baby with very low birth weight accompanied with severe difficulties in birthing.
• Tuberous sclerosis, when tumors start growing in the brain
• High exposure to heavy metals, pesticides and other environmental toxins

These factors along with genetic factors increase the risk. Though Kids with autism have great Math, computer, art skills, they are creative and have special interest in Music and Drawing. They’re really loveable and honest, all they need is a real understanding and belief.

The Doman Method : Complete Lifecycle plan by Doman International :

This method focusses not on a single treatment, but it is a holistic system of treatments and therapies, like, physiological, nutritional, physical, sensory, cognitive and educational treatments, advised by experts in their fields.

Francesca had Cerebral Palsy. She started The Doman Method Program when she was 10 years.

Major problem : She could creep on her hands and knees. Her knees were so bent that when standing holding onto an object, her knees could not straighten up because of spasticity. And her knees were in this position for years! This spasticity and bent knees made walking impossible for her.

Her parent’s approach under Doman Treatment : She took consistent Respiratory Program, Creeping, Patterning, walking under a ladder, and academic intellectual program at home. Her improvement was great, but her knees were still bent as it is with many Cerebral Palsy kids. Francesca’s parents began a intense program from Doman International.
