Celebrate Republic Day : Amazing movies to watch this Republic Day

Happy Republic Day Countrymen!

It’s time to join our fellow countrymen to celebrate 70th Republic Day in the upcoming week. While there are ample ways to celebrate Republic Day, movies do great justice to the overall sentiments of our fellow Indians.

“Patriotism is your conviction that your country is superior to all others because you were born in it ~George Bernard Shaw”

Totally agreeing to Mr. Shaw’s words, we’ve picked up top 5 movies which have been redefining the meaning of patriotism, freedom and democracy. These movies prove the Preamble to the Constitution of India in a true manner.

Here are best 5 Republic day movies you must watch :

1. Mulk (2018):

Society is like the herd of sheep’s where everyone simply loves to follow the herd, without ascertaining the reality. This movie tries to break the stereotypical mindsets of society. It does so by narrating the story of a family that has been labelled anti-national due to the act of one of the family member (who was drawn into the Jihadist conspiracy). Considered to be one of the most acclaimed movies of 2018 with critically acclaimed performances by Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu and Prateik Babbar, Mulk brings into light the various facets of terrorism and the resultant issues stemming from them.

The hard-hitting and detailed screenplay by director Anubhav Sinha is the highlight, which makes Mulk a movie that packs some serious punch. Once you watch this movie (which is currently streaming on ZEE5), you shall be enlightened with clearer insights into the concepts of Justice and Equality.

2. Shahid (2013):

Shahid tells the uncommon story of a common man, based on the life of a lawyer Shahid Azmi, who was murdered at age of 32. His life was a series of unprecedented struggles. From living in a slum to being forced to be a part of terrorist training camp, followed by 7 years of prison, yet Shahid still makes a choice to be a part of the judicial system and fight against the atrocities as a lawyer. The idea to secure Justice for all was taken up by Shahid, who took those cases, which no one cared about and won justice for them. Shahid Azmi has been well portrayed by Rajkummar Rao with impeccable direction by Hansal Mehta.

3. Swades(2004):

Based on a real-life experience of an NRI couple, this Shahrukh Khan starrer had taken the concept of reverse brain drain to new highs and inspired many to return back to India and work for the country. The storyline goes where Mohan Bhargava (Shah Rukh Khan) is seen working with NASA and he comes back to India to take his grandmother with him to the USA. SRK’s transformation from a ‘superstar’ to a common person in a subtle, restrained way was highly remarkable. The movie speaks volumes about making a contribution back to the country, which gave you everything when you were growing.

4. Rang De Basanti (2006):

A generation awakened with this movie! The movie covers how a bunch of restless, carefree youth take a brave stand against injustice, inspired by the deeds of our freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and others. Aamir Khan really captures the essence of DJ’s youthful character and delivers one of his best performances. From dialogue delivery to songs, one can feel patriotism right from the heart.  Probably the message of the film can be summed up in this quote of John F. Kennedy – Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.

5. URI: THE SURGICAL STRIKE (2019)

“How’s the JOSH ?? HIGH SIR”

Recently released, URI is dedicated to unsung, unnamed real-life heroes – The INDIAN ARMY. It is a fitting tribute to the bravery of the people who are constantly watching our backs. The movie highlights the professionalism, planning, dedication and perfection of Special Forces and gives a real depiction of their life. Based on the real-life surgical strike, the movie keeps you at the edge of your seat. With a fantastic central performance by Vicky Kaushal, this movie surely showcases New India, which not only sheds tears for its fallen but is also courageous enough to stand-up and instil fear in the minds of its enemies.

Apart from the amazing movies, another movie that you should consider watching this Republic day is Veergati. A Marathi ZEE5 Original movie premiering on Republic Day, Veergati effectively delves into the aspirations of an Indian soldier while addressing serious issues in the process.

With that, your Republic Day plans should be sorted.

Wishing you all once again a Happy Republic Day!
